Hotel Total Stay Cost: Look Beyond the Nightly Rate
The number shown first in a search result is not always the number that matters. Compare the full cost of the same trip, not just the displayed nightly rate.
Build the same basket for every option
Use the same dates, occupancy and room requirements. Add mandatory property fees, estimated taxes, parking, breakfast, airport transfer or local transportation, and any other predictable charge.
Do not count optional luxury spending as a required hotel cost, but do count charges you realistically cannot avoid.
Refundability has value
A non-refundable rate can be cheaper because you accept more risk. When plans are uncertain, the difference between flexible and prepaid pricing is effectively the price of flexibility.
Read deadlines in the property's local time and note whether cancellation means no charge, one night's charge or the entire stay.
Compare inclusions honestly
Breakfast, parking, airport shuttle, lounge access, kitchen facilities or included resort activities can offset other spending only if you would have paid for them anyway.
